Israel

Isamu Noguchi first visited Israel in January 1961 to work on the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. For this project, completed in 1965, Noguchi moved tons of earth to create an undulating landscape with five curved retaining walls for the display of large sculpture, and an area structured by geometric walls for smaller works. Noguchi felt especially close to this project because of his personal identification with the Jews, whose homelessness he viewed as very much like his own.
